Secondary Alternative Provision
Heeley City Farm’s Secondary Alternative Provision offers secondary school students who struggle in mainstream settings a chance to learn in a more adaptable, hands-on environment. Through practical activities, individualized approaches, and close guidance, students build confidence, develop transferable skills, and discover their potential—both in and beyond the farm.
Animal Care
Students engage in feeding, grooming, and understanding the basic needs of various farm animals. These activities encourage empathy, responsibility, and respect for living creatures and the natural world.

Site Maintenance & Conservation
Tending to paths, fences, and green spaces helps students gain practical upkeep skills. Working outdoors nurtures cooperation, physical well-being, and an appreciation for maintaining a healthy environment.
Trips & External Experiences
Visits to agricultural shows and regional events expose students to new ideas, potential career paths, and the wider world of agriculture. These experiences inspire curiosity and help students envision their future roles in society.
Horticulture & Food Growing
From planting seeds to harvesting produce, students learn about sustainable food production, seasonal cycles, and the importance of nurturing the land. This fosters patience, problem-solving, and pride in tangible achievements.
Woodwork & Joinery
Measuring, cutting, and assembling simple projects teaches problem-solving, safety awareness, and perseverance. Creating something useful by hand encourages confidence and independence.
Qualifications & Personal Growth
Students can work toward recognised qualifications and awards in practical skills. Alongside skill-building, they develop social confidence, learn to follow routines, and gain the resilience needed to take their next steps—whether further education, training, or employment.
