Volunteers get some of the best jobs: they are wide ranging and varied but it is best to come to the farm by appointment or speak to one of the contacts named below to see what is currently on offer.

Remember: skills and experience are not as important as enthusiasm and commitment. Training will be given, expenses paid and protective clothing is provided where appropriate. Look down the table for some of the jobs you could be doing.

CONTACT DESCRIPTION
The Energy House
Nick Parsons 07941 072313
South Yorkshire Energy Centre at Heeley City Farm has recently opened this fantastic information and education centre with everything about energy efficiency, renewable energy and green building in an interactive setting. Volunteers with some knowledge of the issues (but full training will be given) are needed to help open the house to the public.
New Opportunity!!
Rhian Harding 0114 250 5107

We have a new Farm Shop and information point for visitors. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn about shop work and also to raise money for Heeley City Farm.

Animal Care
Jill or Iain 0114 250 5105
Cleaning, feeding, milking and grooming are some of the daily tasks for a farm with around 100 animals (excluding our bees and worms). There are opportunities for regular volunteers to receive training, go to shows and events with the animals and take part in other city farming events in the UK and Europe.
Gardening
Sharron or Neil

With around 1 acre of nursery, vegetable, herb and ornamental gardens on site with four large polytunnels there is year round work for gardeners of all abilities and experience. We use and promote organic and peat-free growing methods on the farm. Farm grown plants and produce is sold from our Garden Centre or used as ingredients in the Café and work could include growing the plants and selling them to the public.

Recycling
Tony Hancox
We have one of the most popular community recycling sites in the city which requires regular maintenance. We also collect materials of use to the farm and run a community composting project. A range of tasks are done from the practical to the educational.
Supported Learning
Aloysius (Ali) 0114 258 0071
We are looking for people who are tolerant, patient, sociable and non-patronising - and with a good sense of humour! The emphasis of our work with people with learning difficulties is on giving support to the person to enable them to do their work, rather than doing the work itself. We mainly work in the gardens, plus some small animal care - but no previous experience of these is needed.
Café Work
Nikola 0114 258 0244
A small community café on the site is open seven days a week serving healthy food, cooked on the premises for visitors, local people and farm workers. The café also caters for larger events on the site. Work can include everything from washing the pots to cooking and serving. Regular volunteers may be offered training including a Certificate in Basic Hygiene.
Youth Work
Iain Jones
The farm is a popular place for young people to come: to work, make friends and learn skills. With volunteer help we are able to offer out of school activities and support for young people on the farm at weekends, holidays and in the evenings.
Education Work
Jo Laycock
258 0482
Enthusiastic and energetic people are required to carry out farm tours and environmental education activities with groups of children and adults. Teaching experience would help but is not essential. During the summer and other school holidays, help is required with playschemes and other special children's activities. N.B. Volunteers are sometimes asked for personal information about themselves, particularly if they are working with children and police checks are always carried out.
Driving
Iain Jones
If you are over 25 with a clean driving licence we have a range of driving jobs during the week and at weekends. The main farm vehicle is a small truck (no special licence necessary, but a MIDAS certificate required - we can provide the training) but we also make use of cars and minibuses. Sometimes we transport animals in a four-wheeled horse box.
Office Jobs
Mike Colombo 250 5103
Occasional tasks arise in a number of areas of farm work including office and reception work, work-processing and computer work, graphics and design, mending things and cleaning just about anything and everything. Special skills in work such as accounting, fund-raising, evening milking of goats and organising events is often required.
* For some jobs we will interview prospective volunteers to judge their suitability.
