Heeley City Farm Projects

Wortley Walled Garden Heritage Project
Wortley Hall Walled Garden is a 3 acre walled garden between Barnsley and Sheffield.  The garden has been uncultivated for many years but is now being brought back into life as an organic kitchen garden by Heeley City Farm. Heritage Lottery funding has been used to look into the conservation of the garden, give the local community opportunities to get involved with their heritage and to open up the site to more visitors.

Local Organisations

Friends of Bishops’ House
Bishops’ House dates from c1500. Friends of Bishops’ House aim to ensure public access is maintained and to assist in planning the future for this precious inner-city jewel.

Friends of the General Cemetery (Sheffield)
Dedicated to promoting and restoring the Cemetery, and to protecting it as a unique heritage site and haven for wildlife.

Gleadless Valley Community Forum
Aims to give local people a voice and the ability to grow the capacity of the local community so that they can overcome barriers to social and economic exclusion.

Heeley Development Trust 
Aims to make Heeley a successful, vibrant and inclusive community.

Meersbrook Park Users Trust
A group of local volunteers interested in the improvement and preservation of the park.

Sheffield Community Enterprise Development Unit (SCEDU)
Supports sustainable community enterprises, develops social capital and provides advice and consultancy to organisations like the Farm.

Sheffield First Partnership
Responsible for setting the city strategy together with the ambitious goals for the transformation of Sheffield, and oversees the development and collective performance of the thematic partnerships.

Sheffield South Community Assembly
Welcomes residents to meet and talk about how they can help shape services in the local neighbourhood. Covers the four wards of Gleadless Valley, Graves Park, Beauchief and Greenhill and Nether Edge.

Community/Environment

Action for Stannington
A public awareness campaign inviting people to take positive action about issues such as littering and thoughtful use of resources. Action for Stannington organises group events to contain the problem e.g. "Spring Clean" whilst on  the other hand we strive to find long term solutions e.g. co-operation with schools and promotion of recycling.

BTCV
International volunteering organization supporting conservation initiatives in the Sheffield and elsewhere in the United Kingdom . Includes training and projects.

Centre for Alternative Technology
Offers solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources.

Community Composting Network
Supports and promotes the community management and use of waste bio-degradable resources. (Based at the Farm).

East End Quality of Life Initiative
An innovative, community led project with a track record of delivering social, economic and environmental change within Sheffield, across South Yorkshire and with influence nationally. The project is funded by Sheffield Primary Care Trust.

Groundwork Sheffield
Groundwork Sheffield is a charity which helps people and organisations make changes in order to create better neighbourhoods, to build skills and job prospects, and to live and work in a greener way.

Grow Sheffield
Encourages and celebrates urban community food growing; information about events, project partners and news

Lockerbrook Outdoor Centre
An exciting residential base for schools, groups, organisations and companies to undertake educational and development work and explore the Peak District National park.

New Start Magazine
The independent resource for regeneration, economic development and sustainable communities

Sheffield Black & Ethnic Minority Environmental Network (SHEBEEN)
Aims to promote the greater social inclusion and empowerment of Sheffield Black and Ethnic Minorities in relation to the built, human and natural environment at a local, regional and global level. 

Sheffield Campaign against Climate Change
A local group linked to the national Campaign against Climate Change. Campaigns, events, profile and get involved.

Schools & Homes Energy Education Project/Solar-Active
Offers unique educational resources, workshops and courses in sustainable development, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust
The largest environmental charity in Sheffield and Rotherham, working to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the local area. 

South Yorkshire Energy Centre (SYEC)
Located at Heeley City Farm, SYEC demonstrates energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable building and provides advice, training and awareness-raising for a wide range of users on fuel poverty, affordable warmth, energy efficiency and renewable/sustainable technologies.

City Farms

European Federation of City Farms
Promotes the interests and mutual co-operation of City Farms that actively promote the equal access and involvement of children, young people and adults through practical experience in a wide range of educational, environmental, recreational, social and economic activities focused around farming, empowering people to improve their own lives and environment in peaceful coexistence.

Federation of City Farms & Community Gardens
Exists to support, represent and promote community-managed farms and gardens across the United Kingdom.

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust
Educational Trust working with inner city children and young people with special needs or disabilities.

Food Growing

Grow Sheffield
A local network of individuals and groups promoting urban organic food growing in Sheffield.

Soil Association
The UK's leading organic organisation, with over 200 staff based in Bristol and Edinburgh and working as certification inspectors across the country. Wortley Hall Walled Garden, which is managed by the Farm, has organic certification by the Soil Association.

Heritage

Council for British Archaeology
The CBA is an educational charity working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

Festival of British Archaeology
Organised by the CBA, Heeley City Farm is pleased to have been part of this annual festival since 2009.

Sheffield Young Archaeologists Club
Sheffield Young Archaeologists' Club (SYAC) is the local group of the national YAC Organisation which is the only national club for young people (aged 8-16) interested in archaeology.  The Sheffield group is run by volunteers who organise trips to places of archaeological (or historical) interest.  

University of Sheffield: Department of Archaeology
Our Community Heritage Team run several  partnership projects with the archaeologists from the University , including ‘Life at No.57: The Sheffield Terraced Street Dig’ and the Reconstructed Roundhouse Project.

Training Providers

Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS)
Charity that supports the development of a vibrant, effective and influential voluntary and community sector locally. VAS provides a wide range of services, including specialist support, advice and training to over 900 voluntary and community organisations in Sheffield each year and we promote and support volunteering in the city.

Young People

Sheffield Youth Offending Service
Key to the successful delivery of the Youth Justice System in Sheffield. The YOS is a multi-agency team made up of representatives from four statutory partners; Children & Young People's Directorate (Sheffield City Council), South Yorkshire Police, The Probation Service and the Primary Care Trust.

A social enterprise formed by a group of local volunteers. Our aim is to develop renewable energy schemes in and around Sheffield. Co-located at Heeley City Farm’s Energy House.

Veolia
We have worked closely with Veolia, selling and running compost and compost bin sale days. Compost bins can be purchased at our Garden Centre.

Wortley Hall
Wortley Hall stands within 26 acres of formal woodland and offers peace and privacy for both business and holiday guests.  The farm restored and maintains the Hall’s Walled Garden.

A one-man company that designed and maintains our website. It has an impressive selection of existing sites, specialising in community based projects and can cater for anyone wanting impressive results on a budget.
