Local Organisations

Heeley Development Trust leads on a number of regeneration projects in Heeley and lower Arbourthorne. Contact them at heeleydevtrust@btinternet.com.

Sheffield Community Enterprise Development Unit (SCEDU for short) support community enterprises like the Farm with advice, consultancy, loans and grants. Informative Web pages at Scedu On Line. Contact them at their Mowbray Street Offices.

School for Environment a new organisation, based in Sheffield which has the the ambition to make environmental training, and the job opportunities it can bring, available to everyone in Sheffield. It is a partnership of environmental training providers including Heeley City Farm, BTCV, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Sheffield College and Sheaf Training.

The Sheffield Forum is, in the words of its founder, Geoff Bowen "a friendly place where Sheffielders can come together to chat about local life, news, politics, sport or whatever else they fancy!" With over 5,000 members there are bound to be people who want to hear your views.

Groundwork Sheffield aims to improve the quality of the local environment, the lives of local people and the success of local businesses in areas in need of investment and support. Its the UK's 49th, and newest Groundwork Trust.

Ranger Events take a look at the outdoor, environmental and family-friendly events happening across the city with Sheffield City Council Rangers. Heeley City Farm events and our weekly 'Health Walks' are also listed

RegenSchool, is a brilliant idea, it: "provides a training programme linking people who are running successful community enterprises with students who are just starting out or are struggling with projects". Heeley City Farm are mentors in the programme as well as founding members of the organisation.

12testing is the one-man company that designs & maintains our website. It has an impressive selection of existing sites and specialise in community based projects or other groups who may want impressive results for less money.

SOLIS are a Sheffield based Interent company offering a wide variety of reasonably priced internet services. They host this site, amongst many others.

SHEEP (the Schools and Homes Energy Education Project) - someone talking some sense in this energy wasteful world. Contact SHEEP for educational advice and consultancy and see some of their work at the farm.

Pedal Pushers the Sheffield Cycling Campaign - have you tried the new cycle route through Heeley yet?

Hebden Bridge Alternative Technology Centre is the other "Green Centre of the North" They have the technology, a shop and heaps of advice and hands on stuff. Well worth a visit.

The Help Yourself Database of Community Organisations in Sheffield is an excellent place to find out about other organisations in your area or your area of interest.

The Vulnerable Peoples Task Group has developed a database of organisations (like Heeley City Farm) that can help vulnerable people get into employment through support, guidance, training, volunteering or work experience.

City Farm and Community Gardens Links

For further information about city farms and community gardens in the UK, contact the national organisation which supports us: The Federation of City Farms & Community Gardens. We are also members of the European Federatoin of City Farms.

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, whilst not a typical city farm, is an educational charity and working farm on the edge of the city and is our partner in delivering NVQs in Agriculture.

Friends of Lynwood Gardens Lynwood Gardens is an area of mature woodland and open glades in Broomhall, near the heart of Sheffield City centre. Support your local community garden!

The Henry Doubleday Research Association is the organisation which promotes organic gardening and horticulture, carries out research, produces books and has a very useful Web site.

The Soil Association is the official body of organic agriculture. Heeley City Farm is not a certified organic farm but we are working towards it! (though our Garden Centre is the only peat-free one in the region!)

The Community Composting Network is the co-ordinating body for community composters in the UK and is based at the farm.

The Composting Association is the body representing the wider composting industry.

The Friends of the General Cemetery dedicated to promoting and restoring the Cemetery, and to protecting it as a unique heritage site and haven for wildlife, close to the heart of Sheffield.

The Centre for Alternative Technology based in North Wales provides excellent advice and educational materials including free gardening 'Tip Sheets' from its Web pages.

The City Farmer's Pages is an excellent Canadian site which links to city farms around the world.

Rare Breeds in South Yorkshire will be useful to anyone with an interest in keeping rare and minority breeds of livestock in our part of the world.
